More than 200 executives share details on BI and data warehousing deployments and motivations associated with using open source software

SAN FRANCISCO (August 26, 2009) –

Third Nature, Inc., a research and consulting company specializing in business intelligence (BI) and information management, today is making the findings of a recent survey available in a new study titled “Open Source Adoption in the Data Warehouse Market.” The firm’s President Mark Madsen conducted and wrote the study, which was sponsored by Infobright and Jaspersoft.

The report can be downloaded today at: http://bit.ly/MH00v. Madsen will also share the results during a webinar on September 17, 2009 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. To register, please visit: http://bit.ly/1hE9O0.

Key findings from the report include:

* Company-wide deployments of open source BI and data warehousing software are becoming more prominent, with more than 40 percent of respondents having deployed or planning to deploy the software this year.
* While cost remains at the top of the list of reasons why customers are deploying open source BI and data warehousing software, “vendor independence” ranks next on the list. The author concludes that this is the result of market consolidation fallout; recent price increases from mega-vendors; and the needs of customers to have more control over what they can and can’t do with their software.
* While license compatibility and procurement processes are no longer concerns for companies deploying open source software, maturity and support of community-based projects still remain as barriers to adoption.
* Small and large organizations are adopting open source BI and data warehousing software more aggressively, with the mid-market trailing slightly.

“Open source business intelligence has clearly moved beyond the early adopter phase,” said Mark Madsen, president of Third Nature and author of the study. “With companies deploying the software company-wide and motivations moving beyond cost, we will see the BI and data warehousing categories further disrupted in the year ahead by open source software vendors such as Infobright and Jaspersoft.”

The study is based on a quantitative survey that Third Nature conducted between April and June of 2009. More than 200 people completed the survey. Sixty-three percent of respondents identified themselves as IT professionals, managers or executives.
