Document stores, led by MongoDB, show strongest demand; Cassandra advances

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (June 13, 2012) –  HADOOP SUMMIT — Jaspersoft, maker of the world’s most widely used business intelligence (BI) software, today announced second quarter metrics for the Jaspersoft Big Data Index, the industry’s first index measuring demand of today’s most popular data sources for storing, analyzing and visualizing Big Data.

Jaspersoft’s Big Data Index is based on the total number of native connector downloads from JasperForge, Jaspersoft’s open source, community-focused web site. The Big Data Index tracks the broadest set of NoSQL and Big Data environments including Hadoop Hive, Hadoop HBase, MongoDB, DataStax Cassandra, Riak, Red Hat Infinispan, Neo4J, Redis, CouchDB, VoltDB and more. By capturing download data from January 2011 to May 2012, Jaspersoft can shed light on growth trends for Big Data analytics overall and rank demand for individual data sources.

“Several NoSQL environments have become exceptionally popular for reporting and analyzing Big Data,” said Brian Gentile, CEO at Jaspersoft. “Companies now have the opportunity to learn more about their operations and performance by analyzing data streams that were too big or too complex to process even a couple years ago. The momentum of Big Data downloads tells us more companies are recognizing this opportunity and taking advantage of it.”

Key findings in the most recent 2012 Big Data Index reveals:

  • Big Data downloads are on pace to grow 92% in 2012 compared to 2011.
  • Over 10,000 Big Data connectors were downloaded in 2012 so far;
  • Since January 2011, document stores garnered the majority of demand with 58 percent of downloads. Key-value stores and Big Table clones tie for second with 20 percent and 19 percent of demand respectively.
  • In 2012, document stores received over 70 percent of demand. MongoDB from 10gen remains the top performer in this group.
  • Cassandra from DataStax grew nearly a 100 percent in May 2012 alone.
  • Hadoop Hive’s download rate shows constant, steady demand from 2011 to 2012.

“The value of Big Data is just being uncovered as data scientists begin to analyze log files, social media feeds, online media, gaming systems, fraud and security monitoring, and a variety of other data-driven applications,” said Karl Van den Bergh, Vice President of Product and Alliances at Jaspersoft. “Jaspersoft’s native Big Data connectors help BI end-users access large and complex data sets and navigate through them using our industry-leading reporting, analysis and dashboards tools.”
